About

Why the name?  First, a definition of the word ‘provident’:

Provident -–adjective

1. having or showing foresight; providing carefully for the future.
2. characterized by or proceeding from foresight: provident care.
3. mindful in making provision (usually fol. by of).
4. economical; frugal; thrifty.

‘Provident’ is a concept that is nearly lost today.  It is the idea of looking down the road and preparing for what may be coming.  Not spending all you have now, but putting some away for a rainy day.  You generally won’t find the word ‘provident’ in the Bible (in most translations anyway) however you find the concept everywhere.

Now, for the word ‘pilgrim’:

Pilgrim –noun

1.a person who journeys, esp. a long distance, to some sacred place as an act of religious devotion: pilgrims to the Holy Land.

2.a traveler or wanderer, esp. in a foreign place.

3.an original settler in a region.

4.one of the band of Puritans who founded the colony of Plymouth, Mass., in 1620.

5.a newcomer to a region or place, esp. to the western U.S.

For the purposes of this site we draw attention to two themes of the word pilgrim.  The first is the idea that this place is not our permanent home, and in a real sense we are all pilgrims on a journey to get there (so don’t get too comfortable here!).  Second, to focus on the ways of ‘The Pilgrims’, those Puritan greats who founded this country and whose rich practical and spiritual heritage is all but lost today.  The Pilgrims stand as quintessential examples of a people wholly reliant on God, their God-given gifts, talents, resources and, of course, each other.

A Provident Pilgrim is someone with a weather-eye on the cultural, economic, and political horizon, who seeks to understand the truth in all things, is committed to planning and preparing themselves, their families and community for what lays ahead, and knows that God is sovereign and is our ultimate strength and resource throughout it all.  And they do all of this for the glory of God.

This site exists for the following reasons:

  • To teach people, especially Christians, how to live in uncertain political and economic times by shedding light on practical, historical, and Biblical ways.
  • To help people understand the difference between ‘intelligence’ and ‘wisdom’.
  • To expose the truth in world events and the potential impact that bad decisions and poor preparation can have on their lives.
  • To pass along great Christian content, particularly that of the Puritan age of which modern society knows so little about.
  • To glorify God, may He bless these efforts to that end.  Soli Deo Gloria!
